I recently spent a few days on a little slice of rustic paradise: Cape Upstart, only accessible by boat out of Molongle Creek, further north than Bowen. It’s the kind of place that etches childhood memories on your heart and mind. A place that gets under your skin, and becomes that place that grounds you.
The moments I’ve shared there have lived with me my whole life. Although I only visited for one week each year, from 5-11 years old, the memories of Cape Upstart are so vivid and impactful for me.
Everything stands still as the sun comes up and goes down. And as I watched the sun set on our last day there, I reflected on how fragile life is, how important family and friends are, and that life is too short to say NO to too many things.
Spend more time with yourself. Spend more time with your family and friends that put a smile on your face. Tell them (and yourself) that you LOVE them… never leave that unsaid, and you can never say it too much. Hug them tight – because if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that those are the moments we come to miss the most when they’re out of reach.
Say YES more often! This opens you up to a whole new world of possibilities, and you might even surprise yourself!
Keep your consciousness in the present moment by practicing mindfulness – notice the sounds, smells, tastes, touches and sights around you. Do this regularly throughout the day, but especially in the best moments: these will be your ‘highlights reel’ as your head hits the pillow each night, and the stories you share with loved ones for years to come.
"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory." – Dr Seuss
